Painting Ideas

Painting ideas are everywhere, but how do you find inspiration then interpret it with your brushes?

I'm thrilled to say I can help! I'm an advocate for art as a means of supporting wellbeing, but I also love to just get stuck in and play with colour.

This page is devoted to sharing my art ideas as well as helping others enjoy the benefits of art. I'll keep it up to date when I post new blogs, and it will serve as a roadmap to creativity.

Below you'll find introductions to different painting ideas as well as links to articles about style, materials, and art for wellness.

painting ideas for everyone

Let's get started with a quick reference guide to the painting inspiration you can find in the pages of Painterly Ponders. The list will grow, and I plan to add a photo library and lessons section too.

Painting Landscapes

If you love nature, travel, and art my landscape painting ideas page is a good place for you to start.

I'm also a travel writer and enjoy photography, so this is where you'll learn more about how I take inspiration from the world around us.

Expect France, Italy, and the UK to start with but I'm also heading across the Atlantic to Detroit in 2025, and if I can manage it I'll spend some time in Canada. I love to tell stories with my brushes as well as words, so let me provide you with innovative ideas to get creative!

Snow Painting Ideas

You could say that ideas for snow scenes should fall under the landscapes, and they do. But the art of painting snow deserves it's own mention here because it's as much about using the white of the paper as it is about what you add to it.

Paper choice, materials and techniques are all important, and of course not every location has snowy inspiration so this makes things easier. Pop over to learn the secret to painting snow!

How to Paint Flowers

Who doesn't love a floral extravaganza? Well perhaps not everyone, but painting flowers is a great way to explore your technique. From botanical detail to the impressionistic joy of Monet and Van Gogh, flowers feature heavily in art history.

For those wishing to paint for pleasure, flowers are a lovely way to express your creativity. I will have a separate album of photos available for this because I grow my ideas from seed...literally.

It's fascinating to depict seedlings, buds, flowers, and of course seed heads. Some don't allow their flowers to go to seed but I do. This means I have the full cycle for inspiration and plenty of seeds from the following year.  If flowers are your thing, you might like this article about painting flowers.

Painting Ideas to Support Wellness

Art is powerful. Painting, words and music have helped me to overcome some challenges in the last few years, and I want to help others benefit from the same.

Whether it's through a daily journal, sketching, or throwing paint at a canvas while listening to your favourite tune, the arts are all fabulous medicine.

This is something I'm passionate about, so to learn more about how my painting ideas and writing combine to help me and others navigate busy lives and minds.

Painting Books to Inspire You

This one is a slow burn, but I'm writing a book which combines my love for art with travel. My first book was published nine years ago, so it's about time I shared my adventures again.

If you're interested, you can find my Amazon author profile here, so please feel free to follow me.

I also buy art books regularly, so I'll soon share those with you. Note...these are my guilty pleasure. I have been known to be found sitting on the floor surrounding by books and completely unaware of what time it is!

Soon, I will set up a dedicated page where I share the books I love, but this month I'm focussing on painting ideas. It's all in the pipeline though; 2025 is going to be a good year.

Places that Provide Painterly Inspiration

Every day, I find spot something that provides me with ideas. Watch this space for articles, photos, and painting ideas that are drawn from my travels. As well as learning to paint with me, you'll also travel vicariously through my words. We'll be visiting:

  • Bath, UK
  • Brittany, France
  • Devon, UK
  • Provence, France
  • Venice, Italy
Use photos to study how colour changes in the distance and to enhance your painting ideas

For example, this photo is of Carantec, Brittany. It's a great example of how light changes in the distance - colours that are closer are more intense. Being aware of this will change how you look at things, and tuning in to your surroundings will help you to improve your paintings.

At times, I'm amazed by how light varies in different locations. Fortunately, I have lots of examples, so I'll be covering topics like this too.

Ideas Breed Ideas

As I've mentioned, finding painting ideas is easy once you tune your senses and let go. You'll find that once you start - whether it's taking photos, painting en plein air, or taking lessons - the ideas will flow.
