Poppies by the Estuary – Original Watercolour Painting

A bright watercolour painting of wildflowers near the estuary.

As the poppies float on the breeze, a ship’s mast appears near the distant trees.

Inspired by the Brittany coast in France, painted in loose watercolour on 100% cotton rag paper by me, Emma Herbert.

A great way to start collecting affordable original art. Perfect as a gift or to brighten your own home.

Impressionistic but with a nod to minimalists, it’s a lovely painting that captures the atmosphere of the day.

I’ll be adding more of these in August along with some new ACEO paintings, and some created in watercolour pencils that are more realistic.

For now though, it’s expressive, colourful, and full of movement.

Whether you love flowers or landscapes, this artwork is for you.

An impressionistic painting on handmade cotton rag paper with exposed deckled edges.

Such a beautiful surface to paint on, although you never know what will happen because the paper is so absorbent.

This is an A5 painting, approximately 8 by 5 inches, and painted in watercolour. It’s part of my series of landscape painting ideas for Summer 2025.

Wax resist applied randomly allows the paint to explore the paper, and this time it resulted in what appears to be a ship’s mast poking up between the meadow and the treeline. I never know what the result will be, and it’s one of the things I love about painting in watercolour.

Poppies are the star and the paper enhances this affordable artwork.
