A step too far for the writer in me

Quote of the Day January 23rd

We're drowning in information and starving for knowledge

How apt? This quote was written by Rutherford D, Rogers, and his words ring true in 2026.

It’s how I feel when I switch on the news, when I doubt whether what I’m seeing is authentic, and when I think about the way our brains are fed rather than seeking wonder.

Then, this morning I saw the news that Amazon Kindle books now have AI embedded in them. This means that a reader can essentially ask a question while in the book, and the AI will respond with what it thinks is the right answer.

For example, you can’t quite remember something about a character, so rather than going back to the page where you read it, you ask AI to find it and tell you.

This risks obliterating the original intent of the author. Of the flow of the words as they dribbled from brain to pen. Of the 3am ponderings on character flaws, story arcs, and plot twists.

It amplifies the pain we suffer as writers when we bleed onto the page.

You think I’m kidding?

There is no opt-out. I accept that leveraging online eBook sales assists my bottom line, but I don’t think the reward is enough to sacrifice my blood and tears.

Copyright exists for a reason, and I think the time has come to return to paper only.

As things stand, I’m removing my eBooks from Kindle when my contract expires. I’ll make them available through my website and Bookfunnel, and I’ll have complete control and no huge fee deducted from my royalties.

Paperbacks and hardcovers? Yes, I’ll focus on those and make them available in bookstores and libraries as usual.

Much like my desire to return to pen and paper, my desire to take back control of my creative labours of love is running deep and strong.

Let’s clear the flood, save ourselves from drowning, and let creatives share their knowledge.

It’s our time.
